ILO, SORAL, and OHCHR convened workshop on developing code of conduct for SORAL 11/04/2012

In the context of the EU-funded project “Promoting Rights of Women Domestic Workers/PROWD,” the International Labour Organization Regional Office for Arab States (ILO-ROAS), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the Syndicate of the Owners of Recruitment Agencies in Lebanon (SORAL) convened a two-day workshop on the development of a code of conduct for SORAL. The code of conduct is expected to comply with ILO Conventions on Decent Work for Domestic Workers and Private Employment Agencies.

Prior to the workshop, ILO convened a roundtable with the NGOs servicing women migrant domestic workers and another with the leaders of the various communities of migrant workers. These sessions helped identify good and not so good practices of private employment agencies. Feedback from NGOs and community leaders will hopefully inform the articles of the code of conduct which will be drafted by a sub-committee of SORAL members.

Upon endorsement, the code of conduct will be used as a tool to raise the awareness of recruitment agencies across Lebanon about the rights of women migrant domestic workers.
